Death, Beauty & Beer Tour of Brooklands and Sale
A morbidly thirsty tour with verdant delights.
1pm Sunday 2 June, 2024
Meeting at Brooklands Metrolink Station we first take a look at some of the remarkable sepulchres in Sale and Brooklands Cemetery.
There we can discuss the lives, loves and stories of some of the inert residents. These include such luminaries as James Prescott Joule, the man for whom the unit of energy is named, and a man he collaborated with, the equally inventive John Benjamin Dancer who invented microphotography.
Here also lies suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst's remarkable husband Richard. This couple were a proper love-match so we discuss why Emmeline wasn't buried with Richard. Expect lots of other tales of the great and good (and not so good) that sleep here such as rags to riches newspaper magnate, Edward Hulton.
After the cemetery we walk the short distance, with a couple of stops to take in other tales, to the beautiful Walkden Gardens, one of the secret joys of the south Manchester area. Maintained by the Friends Group we can enjoy the Wisteria Arch, the Dovecote Garden, the Japanese Garden and much more packed into a satisfyingly tiny area.
We then walk into Sale for a welcome pint or two at a specialist ale bar. The perfect ending to a what should be a thoroughly entertaining stroll.
Meet: Brooklands Metrolink stop 1pm
Finish: Sale Metrolink stop 3pm/3.30pm
The travel and booze expenses are not included in the £15 but the great stories and evocative locations come as standard.
