The Secrets of Prestwich
Saturday 31 July 3pm
This intriguing township in Greater Manchester straddles a Roman Road and has a fine tale to tell. It has many unusual and interesting features including a Grade 1 listed, and quite magnificent, parish church. St Mary's, on an equally magnificent site.
The tour will take in the church and the monuments in its graveyard. This is one of the exceptional memorial areas in the region with graves of people such as William Sturgeon who invented the first electromagnets and the first practical British electric motor. There’s also the grave of Sir William Fairbairn, one of the great industrialists and engineers of the nineteenth century. 50,000 people attended his interment.
The tour will explore the remarkable Prestwich phenomenon of the ‘artisan botanists’, working men such as Richard Buxton and John Horsefield, who became authorities on the natural world around them. There are few places which commemorate such men in the country but in Prestwich there is the Railway and Naturalist pub.
The tour also takes a more up-to-date look at this burgeoning suburb and the individuals which make it such an interesting place today.
This tour is part of the Surprising Manchester series in which places away from the city centre are explored.
Meet at St Mary’s Church gate, Church Lane, M25 1AN.
