Heaton Hall and Park Tour
Saturday 15 May 10.30am
£15
‘Heaton (Hall), the seat of Lord Grey de Wilton, about four miles from Manchester, is beautifully situated on an eminence in a rich park. This truly elegant seat was built from a design of Wyatt.’ Aitken, 1795.
James Wyatt was one of the great architects of his day and Heaton Hall is one of his masterworks. The tour includes one of the most beautiful houses in the UK with interiors that mix the elegant and opulent.
We also visit or pass the highest point in the City of Manchester, the Temple, the Dower House, the Stables and even the reconstructed façade of Manchester’s original town hall.
There are tales of the owners, the Earls of Wilton, the diaries of Fanny Kemble, the visit of the Duke of Wellington for the opening of the Liverpool and Manchester railway in 1830, the performances of ‘the world’s first DJ’ William Grimshaw, the Pope John Paul II’s visit and huge gigs from the likes of the Stone Roses.
The latter occasions have been during Heaton Park’s role as the city’s ‘people’s park’, following the sale of the estate to Manchester at the beginning of the twentieth century. Expect lots of tales about this period in the eventful story of this grand house and estate. Heaton Park has a history as rich and extensive as the place itself.
Meet: Heaton Park entrance, opposite Heaton Park Metrolink Station.
