A TOUR around a fascinating area of the city filled with great stories and impressive sites as well as lots of associations with great characters such as the Pankhursts, the Behrens family, Major-General Worsley, Edmund Sharpe, Sunny Lowry and Neville Cardus.
We pass the restored Platt Hall, a handsome Georgian residence, the crazy terracotta church of Holy Trinity, ruined medieval remnants, the mysterious Anglo-Saxon Nico Ditch which was possibly the boundary between Mercia and Northumbria.
The list goes on; there are grand houses to view, mighty educational establishments, stories of FA Cup Finals and champion cyclists plus the former abode of epic engineer Sir Joseph Whitworth and CP Scott, the celebrated Manchester Guardian editor.
