Talk: The Lost Buildings of Manchester - Eagle pub (five minutes walk from Manchester Cathedral)
6.30pm, Tuesday 12 October
FREE
Manchester is a city of wonderful buildings, old and new.
But it is also a city of lost buildings that range from the magnificent and the grand to the modest and the charming.
Illustrated with superb pictures, some rare, some never seen before, I'll discuss some of the disappeared and demolished wonders. The talk will be filled with great stories too, of significant people, of eccentrics. As usual there'll be lots of humour and lots of fun.
My two books that feature lost buildings: Lost & Imagined Manchester and Illusion & Change Manchester will be available at a discount. These retail at £16.99 but will be available for £12 on the night.
Some of the lost buildings included might be the grand Assize Courts, the vast Art Treasures Building, the full size replica medieval Manchester built in 1887, the beautiful and curious Botanical Gardens and Palm House, Dr Charles White's lovely house on King Street, the magical Hippodrome, the monumental General Post Office, Britain's biggest bandstand in Heaton Park, the delicious Market Street Kardomah Café, the beautiful Manchester General Cemetery Gates, the mighty Royal Exchange, third building and the advanced warehouse of York House.
Venue: The Eagle Pub, Collier Street, Salford, M3 7DW. The pub is close to Trinity Way and a very short walk (500m) from Manchester Cathedral.
The Eagle is a lovely Edwardian pub with a great history and a wonderful landlady in Esther. The pub interior is of the classic multi-roomed variety and has great charm. The event room is equally attractive and cosy.
