The Surprising City Series: Clayton Hall, Sports City & Philips Park

A Historic House, Coal, Football and a glorious interior

Saturday 20 April - 3pm

East Manchester contains rich history and surprising and dramatic buildings and sights. This tour takes in SportCity and the Etihad Stadium (externally), the National Cycling Centre and Manchester BMX, Philips Park and the lovely Clayton Hall and the utterly beautiful St Cross Church.

There are tales of a busy life before industrialisation, of how this part of Manchester became one of the workshops of the world, of one of the deepest mines every dug in the UK, of a flood when the dead rose, of a hall that has survived against all odds and of how one of the great nineteenth century architects delivered a sublimely graceful structure.

With the Etihad Stadium and the Velodrome, sport doesn’t miss out either, nor do stories of the rich variety of people who have lived in this fascinating part of Manchester.

Start time: 3pm

Please meet ten minutes before the start of the tour at Clayton Hall, Clayton Hall Rd, Manchester M11 4RU.
