Inside Ordsall Hall: the guided tour
(plus a short walk and history of Manchester Ship Canal)
Sunday 9 October 12.30pm
It’s a beautiful medieval hall in an unlikely setting that has survived as dream of Ye Olde Merry Englande. The contrast with the modern housing estate and the house’s location at the heart of the Greater Manchester conurbation is almost absurd. It’s a proper ‘then and now' moment although you might not know this as you scoot past the rear of the building on Ordsall Lane. Go round the front on Taylorson Street and it’s a jaw-dropper. This is a nigh perfect medieval façade behind which shelters a nigh perfect medieval hall.
This fully guided tour takes you round the house, inside and out, looking at its remarkable architecture and its equally remarkable story and the myths which attach to the building. The commentary will reveal what a treasure we have surviving in Salford.
This tour starts at Wharfside Metrolink Station and also examines how the River Irwell became the mighty Manchester Ship Canal. The commentary will be fact-filled, fun and even moving on occasion with tales of treason, love and ghosts.
The £15 ticket includes a £4 donation to Ordsall Hall.
Meet: Wharfside Metrolink Station, 12.30pm.
